Huntington Beach, CA, February 22nd, 2022
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) recently added perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and its salts to the list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause reproductive toxicity for purposes of Proposition 65. OEHHA had previously announced a public meeting and comment period back in October before the listing decision was made that became effective on December 31, 2021.
PFNA is a man-made compound that has been used in a number of products over the years. It is also considered to be an environmental contaminant because the chemical breaks down slowly in the environment. A year before OEHHA took action, Assembly Bill No. 2762 was passed and signed into law in California. It prohibits a person or entity from manufacturing, selling, delivering, holding, or offering for sale, in commerce any cosmetic product that contains PFNA and a number of other chemicals as intentionally added ingredients, except under specified circumstances. That law goes into effect in 2025.
“The addition of PFNA to the Prop 65 list means businesses must now provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to this chemical compound in the products that they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “LA Testing’s parent company, EMSL Analytical, Inc., is certified and available to test drinking water and other potable water samples from California for PFNA at their headquarters in New Jersey. LA Testing’s California laboratories also provide environmental, industrial hygiene and material testing services for many of the other chemical compounds found on California’s Prop 65 list.”
