Huntington Beach, CA, October 14th, 2021
National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) is a joint initiative of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). For 2021, NLPPW takes place from October 24th through the 30th. Internationally, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes those same dates as International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action. Both events are designed to educate and encourage preventive actions to protect people, and especially children, from the dangers of lead exposure.
Lead is a highly toxic heavy metal that can harm the brain and other vital organs if inhaled or consumed. While everyone is susceptible to lead poisoning, children are particularly vulnerable. The primary exposure risk for most children comes from lead-based paints that were used in many homes and apartments throughout California up until 1978. Another exposure route for some children comes from elevated levels of lead in water.
“With awareness comes action and the good news is the CDC reports that lead poisoning is entirely preventable,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “This is important because even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to affect learning, ability to pay attention, and academic achievement. Assisting in this effort are the scientists at LA Testing. Our environmental and industrial hygiene laboratories in California offer lead and other hazardous material testing services for samples from air, water, paint, dust, soil, and other matrices. We also provide all of the sampling supplies needed and even offer easy-to-use test kits for lead and other common exposure risks.”
Last year, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/YfaJoRrOpI4.
