Huntington Beach, CA, September 8th, 2021
In 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The annual event encourages people across the country to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions, and communities. The theme for this year’s NPM is Prepare to protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.
For businesses and institutions, NPM is an important reminder of the need to have contingency plans in place to respond to a natural or man-made emergency. Being prepared is crucial since according to the information posted by Ready.gov several years ago, up to 40% of businesses affected by a natural or human-caused disaster do not reopen. These events could include:
- Natural hazards like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and earthquakes
- Health hazards such as widespread and serious illnesses like COVID-19 or the flu
- Human-caused hazards including accidents and acts of violence
- Technology-related hazards such as power outages and equipment failures
“National Preparedness Month is a time for companies and organizations to review their emergency plans or put them on paper if they don’t already exist, so they will be able to quickly and safely get back to business after an emergency,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “Over the years, LA Testing has been a key partner for many facing these types of challenges. Our California laboratories offer environmental, industrial hygiene, and indoor air quality laboratory testing services for viruses, bacteria, fungi, chemicals, and radiological hazards.
