Huntington Beach, CA, August 19th, 2021
The County of Los Angeles Public Health reported that people in the county, across the United States, and around the world are getting skin infections caused by community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). For those who do develop an infection, it is resistant to many antibiotics, making it a serious challenge to treat.
MRSA infections were traditionally associated with hospitalization or other healthcare-associated risk factors. In more recent years, medical providers have observed MRSA infections in an increasing number of people who lack traditional healthcare-associated risk factors. These people appear to have what is now referred to as CA-MRSA.
CA-MRSA infections are defined by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) as MRSA infections in people with no history of the following risk factors within the year prior to the MRSA culture date:
- Hospitalization or surgery
- Permanent indwelling catheters or percutaneous medical devices
- Residence in a long-term care facility
- Dialysis
- MRSA culture <48 hours after hospital admission
“The likelihood of getting a CA-MRSA infection increases with people in activities or places that involve crowding, skin-to-skin contact, and shared equipment or supplies,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “Athletes, daycare and school students, military personnel in barracks, the homeless, and prison inmates are considered to have a higher chance of developing this type of infection. Therefore, cleaning and disinfection procedures in high-risk environments are so important for preventing the spread of CA-MRSA and other superbugs. Assisting in these efforts are the scientists at LA Testing. We offer a comprehensive range of surface, environmental, and infection control testing services that can be useful in determining the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred.”
LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about CA-MRSA that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/EAPbbSJmXOg.
