Title Water-Themed Competition Impacted by Illnesses Likely Linked to Recreational Waters
Introduction LA Testing provides aquatic and other environmental testing services to identify microbial and chemical exposure risks.

Huntington Beach, CA, August 5th, 2021

Television production at a water-themed game show in California was recently halted following an outbreak of illnesses onset after one crew member tested positive for Giardia according to multiple media outlets.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes Giardia as a tiny parasite that causes the diarrheal disease giardiasis. It is found on surfaces or in soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with feces from infected people or animals. Giardia spreads easily and can spread from person to person. The CDC states that the most common way people get sick is by swallowing contaminated drinking water or recreational water.

Some people with giardiasis have no symptoms at all. If signs and symptoms do develop, they may vary and usually begin 1 to 2 weeks after becoming infected with Giardia. Short-term symptoms listed by CDC include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Foul-smelling, greasy stools
  • Stomach cramps or pain
  • Upset stomach or nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration

“Unfortunately, it can take 2 to 6 weeks, and sometimes longer, for people to no longer have symptoms from giardiasis,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “LA Testing provides analytical services and sampling supplies to identify the presence of Giardia and a wide range of other microorganisms. These services can be used to proactively test water samples or to pinpoint the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred.”

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about Giardia that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/jlvXtvWm80A.
