A supplement company from Southern California recently announced the recall of specific lots of MCT oil powder. The voluntary action, which was posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recall list, was initiated because the product may contain undeclared milk allergens according to the ingredient supplier.
The dietary supplement was sold online and in some grocery stores. The recall notice states that people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans.
“A milk allergy is one of the more common food allergies found in children, but they can affect people of all ages,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “For those with the allergy, avoiding foods, beverages, and supplements with milk from cows and other mammals is the best way to prevent a potentially serious reaction.”
Helping food manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulators, and health officials with FALCPA and other labeling and testing requirements are the food scientists at LA Testing. They offer a wide range of testing and labeling services that can be essential for the public so products with known allergens are not consumed.
