Title Identifying Flesh Eating Bacteria and Other Microbial Pathogens with Environmental Testing
Introduction LA Testing offers environmental and infection control testing services and sampling supplies to identify pathogens associated with necrotizing fasciitis and other human, animal, and plant infections.

Huntington Beach, CA, June 10th, 2021

Necrotizing fasciitis, commonly referred to as “flesh eating bacteria,” is described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a bacterial infection of the tissue under the skin that surrounds muscles, nerves, fat, and blood vessels. While these infections are relatively rare, necrotizing fasciitis can result in a loss of limbs and even death. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis, rapid antibiotic treatment, and prompt surgery are very important for stopping these infections.

Many types of bacteria can cause necrotizing fasciitis, several listed by the CDC include:

  • Group A Streptococcus
  • Bacterioides
  • Klebsiella
  • Clostridium
  • Escherichia coli
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Aeromonas hydrophila

“The good news is a person’s chances of getting necrotizing fasciitis is extremely low if they have a healthy immune system and practice good hygiene and proper wound care,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “A number of these same types of bacteria are also associated with healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), food poisoning, sewage contamination, and other harmful conditions. At LA Testing, we provide environmental, surface, and food testing to identify these and many other microbial pathogens. These services can be instrumental for spotting exposure risks. This is especially true in sensitive indoor environments, such as medical centers and long-term care facilities where proactively testing to pinpoint any lapses in infection control procedures can be vital."

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about necrotizing fasciitis that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/bh--RlpuJIE.
