Last month, a large water tank on a hill above a condominium complex in San Diego suffered an overflow valve malfunction. The mishap caused an untold amount of water to be released from the tank, flooding several condos at the bottom of the hill. Multiple units suffered extensive damage when up to 9 inches of water entered the homes before the valve could be shut off.
Property owners and tenants were left with cleaning up the mess and filing insurance claims. It’s important for those people to recognize that any type of water damage could also result in potential microbial issues. This can occur if the properties are not thoroughly dried and remediated in a timely manner. Standing water, wet materials, and high humidity levels are breeding grounds for mold, which can quickly create health and safety concerns. Cleanup and rebuilding efforts can cause mold to become airborne and spread throughout a property, even to areas not damaged by the flood, if the proper safety precautions have not been taken.
“The indoor environmental quality testing experts at LA Testing are available to help assess potential microbial and chemical contaminants following flooding events,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “With multiple laboratories in California, we offer laboratory services for mold, bacteria, lead-based paints, asbestos, and a wide range of exposure concerns. LA Testing provides all of the sampling supplies and even carries easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are also available.”
