Huntington Beach, CA, May 25th, 2021
With summer just around the corner, California's beaches, lakes, and rivers will soon be popular destinations as millions of residents and tourists enjoy beach and water attractions over the coming months. For many, this means taking part in water-related activities, such as swimming, surfing, scuba diving, fishing, and boating.
After spending the day at the beach or on the water, most people leave with nothing but great memories; however, the water can cause sickness in some. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that recreational water illness (RWI) outbreaks caused by germs or chemicals found in polluted waters have substantially increased over the past several decades.
Some of the sources of this pollution, listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), include:
- Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs)
- Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs)
- Trash and Litter
- Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs)
- Boat Discharges
"RWIs and beach-related illnesses are typically spread by swallowing, inhaling mists or aerosols of, or having contact with contaminated water,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “LA Testing's California laboratories offer a comprehensive range of aquatic and other environmental testing services for industries who rely on clean water and beaches, and for the general public to assist in reducing the chance of coming in contact with microbial or chemical pollutants while in the water.”
