A daily newspaper recently published a story about tenant complaints at an apartment complex located in Central California. According to the report, which included multiple interviews, many tenants have raised concerns about water leaks, mold growth, and other living condition issues with property management allegedly not addressed.
Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for mold problems to begin in an apartment, condo, or single-family home. Mold can quickly grow if water damage or elevated humidity levels are not addressed in a timely manner. In fact, it often only takes about 48 hours for mold to begin to grow on many damp building materials, furnishings, and personal belongings. Mold not only damages materials but can also quickly lead to indoor air quality concerns and potential health issues for anyone living there.
Exposure to elevated levels of mold can cause allergies and act as a respiratory irritant. For some asthmatics, exposure could trigger an asthma attack. Inhaling high levels of mold can also exacerbate other respiratory conditions, such as COPD. Some types of mold associated with water-damaged buildings can cause opportunistic infections for people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.
“Property managers, tenants, and homeowners need to be on the lookout for signs of water damage and be ready to react quickly,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “If there are concerns that mold is present, LA Testing offers laboratory services, sampling supplies, and easy-to-use test kits to identify mold and many other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) issues. We also carry a full line of building inspection tools, such as moisture meters and infrared cameras, which can be very useful for identifying conditions conducive to mold growth. If mold is found, testing can also be instrumental for assessing if cleanup and remediation efforts were successful.”
