Huntington Beach, CA, May 13th, 2021
May is recognized as National Lyme Disease Awareness Month across the United States. It is a time when government agencies, healthcare advocates, and those dedicated to educating the public about the condition and ways to avoid infection join together to spread information about the disease.
In California, Assembly Concurrent Resolution 42 was introduced to the State Legislature earlier this year to proclaim the month of May 2021 as Lyme Disease Awareness Month, officially. In many parts of California, this time of year is considered the start of tick season.
Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi. The bacterium is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. In California along its West Coast, the western black-legged tick spreads the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most humans are infected through the bite of immature ticks known as nymphs. Nymphs are tiny (less than 2 mm) and difficult to see; they feed during the spring and summer months. Adult ticks can also transmit the Lyme disease bacterium, but they are much larger and are more likely to be discovered and removed before they have had time to cause an infection.
“Nationwide, some studies suggest up to 476,000 people get Lyme disease each year,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “Health officials encourage people to seek medical attention if they observe Lyme disease symptoms and have had a tick bite. Fortunately, the ticks themselves can also be tested for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi to help assess someone’s risk if they have been bitten. LA Testing’s network of laboratories are pleased to offer this service utilizing a PCR-based DNA analysis that is exceptionally accurate. Additionally, the laboratory can provide an easy-to-use Lyme Disease Tick Test Kit to collect samples.”
