Title Investigative Report Reveals People May have been Exposed to Asbestos at a California University
Introduction LA Testing provides analytical services and sampling supplies to identify asbestos in materials and from air and dust samples to prevent exposure risks.

Garden Grove, CA, October 8th, 2015

Recently, Sacramento’s ABC10 published a report about whistleblowers at the University of California, Davis. According to the article, several employees and student helpers have claimed that managers from the Academic Technology Services Department ordered them to drill hundreds of holes in university buildings that may have contained asbestos.

The news report states that this has purportedly been going on for years and that the work took place at times while students were present and the buildings ventilation systems were operating. Some of the work was in Wellman Hall which has been confirmed to contain asbestos in wall texture and joint compounds from previous testing. One whistleblower described a situation where an entire room was filled with dust from drilling that was being blown throughout the building through the air handling system.

Many buildings and homes constructed up until the 1970s used a number of materials that contained asbestos. Asbestos fibers can easily become airborne when these materials are disturbed during construction and demolition activities. Cases of asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos can take decades to appear.

“There are strict safety regulations that require workers handling asbestos-containing materials to protect themselves and others from the hazards associated with aerosolized fibers,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, California’s leading asbestos testing laboratory. “Anytime suspect materials are going to be disturbed they should first be tested to determine if asbestos is present. LA Testing provides all of the sampling supplies and analytical services needed to test building materials as well as dust and air samples to protect workers and all building occupants.”
