Garden Grove, CA, May 12th, 2015
Last week was recognized as Wildfire Awareness Week by CAL FIRE. It highlights the importance of wildfire prevention and preparedness. Fire departments across California worked to remind residents of the dangers posed by wildfires and the simple steps that can be taken to prepare for and prevent them from occurring.
This year’s week of recognition is especially important as California has experienced record low rainfall amounts and continued drought. This has made for the potential for explosive fire conditions across most of the state. Although May has been traditionally viewed as the beginning of wildfire season in California, dry conditions have already allowed hundreds of fires to occur this year.
When wildfires do occur under these current dry conditions, any homes and structures in the path of the flames are at great risk. Even properties miles from the flames can be damaged due to thick smoke that can easily infiltrate a home or building.
One California laboratory that provides expert analysis of smoke damage and fire residues for residents impacted by wildfires is LA Testing. “Smoke from wildfires is filled with combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “These can have damaging effects to both properties and human health when people are exposed to these substances. When it comes to smoke damage, it is often left to the property owner to provide proof of damages to their insurance provider. At LA Testing we offer surface and air testing services that can be used to prove the presence of smoke residues and odors. These same tests can also be utilized after the property is remediated to ensure it has been brought back to pre-fire conditions.”
LA Testing has produced an online video about smoke damage that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owo8lIoVTuk.
