Title Candlestick Park Demolition has Neighbors Concerned about Potential Health Risks
Introduction LA Testing provides analytical services to help protect the public and workers from airborne exposure risks to potentially hazardous materials.

Garden Grove, CA, March 23rd, 2015

Last month, KTVU published a story about the ongoing demolition of Candlestick Park and concerns expressed by neighbors who worry about exposure to hazardous materials in dust generated by the project.  People living in nearby areas are worried about possible exposure to such materials as asbestos and lead that may drift into their neighborhoods.

Originally, contractors responsible for demolishing the stadium wanted to implode the structure to expedite the process of taking down the enormous structure.  Neighbors then raised enough concerns over the amount of dust likely generated by an implosion that those plans were scrapped and more traditional demolition activities were adopted that take months longer to complete.

Construction of Candlestick Park began back in 1958.  During that time, building materials often contained hazardous substances that are no longer used in modern construction.  Materials from the period sometimes contained everything from asbestos and lead to even mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

“Demolition, renovation and remodeling projects can all generate high levels of particulate matter and dusts that may contain a host of hazardous substances,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Depending on the scope and type of project, these materials can spread throughout the project area and even onto neighboring properties.  For people concerned about what they may be exposed to both inside and outside of their home or business, LA Testing offers sampling supplies and analytical services to identify a broad spectrum of material, chemical and microbial pollutants.”
