Title California Company Fined for Failing to Comply with Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair & Painting Rule
Introduction LA Testing provides laboratory services to help companies identify lead and other hazardous materials to comply with health and safety regulations.

Garden Grove, CA, December 8th, 2014

Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that a Vacaville company had been fined $51,000 for failure to comply with the federal Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule.  The fine was issued after the company renovated four foreclosed homes in Napa, El Sobrante and Santa Rosa.

The EPA reports that the company failed to obtain an EPA certification, use certified renovators and comply with other work practice requirements for handling lead-based paint safely.

“Lead-based paint is the main source of lead poisoning for children, which can cause learning disabilities and behavior problems,” said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. “EPA will take enforcement action against companies that operate without the training and certification needed to protect children, families and workers.”

Many homes built before 1960 contain heavily leaded paint and some homes built as recently as 1978 also contain lead-based paint. These paints could be on the interior or exterior of homes.  Exposure to lead can occur when lead-based paints deteriorate or if they are improperly removed from surfaces during renovation or demolition activities.

One of California’s largest laboratories that provide testing services and test kits for lead is LA Testing.  “The RRP regulations are meant to prevent hazardous lead exposure for both workers and building occupants,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “At LA Testing, we offer quick and affordable testing solutions to identify this toxic metal, prevent needless exposure to these and other dangerous substances, and allow companies to avoid costly fines.”

LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about lead hazards during home renovations and remodeling projects that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/4KwNujqAL9A.
