Title California Police Investigate Meth Given to Trick-Or-Treater
Introduction LA Testing provides analytical services to identify materials suspected to be methamphetamine and other illicit drugs.

Garden Grove, CA, November 14th, 2014

Earlier this month, Fox News published a report of an 8-year-old girl in Northern California who apparently was given a bag of methamphetamine while trick-or-treating. The girl’s parents reportedly told police in Hercules that they discovered a small bag with powder mixed in with the child’s Halloween candy.

Methamphetamine is a drug that is also known as meth, speed, crank, crystal or ice. It is a potent synthetic drug that stimulants the central nervous system. The effects of meth are similar to those of cocaine.

Due to its high potential for abuse, methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II drug and is available only through a prescription that cannot be refilled. Although methamphetamine can be prescribed by a doctor, its medical uses are limited, and the doses that are prescribed are much lower than those typically abused.

“Fortunately, the parents found the meth before the young child accidentally consumed it thinking it was some type of candy,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “At LA Testing, our network of laboratories offer analytical services for materials suspected to be methamphetamine and other illicit drugs. This type of testing can be essential in helping parents, law enforcement and employers determine if a substance is an illegal drug. LA Testing also offers analytical services to help determine if methamphetamine was once produced in a property as these buildings often have hazardous residues and chemicals left behind that unsuspecting occupants may come into contact with.”

LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about meth and the dangers of clandestine laboratories that can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfdbuOp00Fg.
