Garden Grove, CA, October 16th, 2014
Last month, the Air Resources Board (ARB) announced that the agency had fined 24 consumer products companies for air quality violations in the first half of 2014. The ARB regulates consumer products used in homes and businesses because many can emit gases, known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which react with other pollutants and sunlight to form ground-level ozone and smog.
According to a news release from ARB about the fines, a total of over $406,000 will go to the California Air Pollution Control Fund to support air quality projects and research to improve the state’s air quality.
Hair styling goods, windshield washer fluid and insecticide products were among the culprits that the ARB estimates resulted in some 26 tons of excess VOC emissions. ARB Enforcement Chief James Ryden was quoted, “Sometimes we don’t realize that the products we use every day can affect the air we breathe. Reducing VOC emissions from consumer products is an important component of the air quality improvement equation.”
Product off-gassing can also cause high levels of VOCs in the air people breathe in their homes, offices and schools. Elevated concentrations of these chemicals in indoor environments can come from the off-gassing of consumer products, building materials and many types of furnishing. Exposure to these compounds can cause a myriad of health concerns. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, “Key signs or symptoms associated with exposure to VOCs include conjunctival irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction, dyspnea, declines in serum cholinesterase levels, nausea, emesis, epistaxis, fatigue, dizziness.”
In California, LA Testing offers product off-gassing and indoor air quality testing services for VOCs. “Companies need to be aware of VOC regulations for consumer products sold in California to prevent costly fines and exposing people and the environment to potentially harmful chemicals,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “LA Testing’s network of laboratories provides VOC testing services to manufacturers, importers, retailers, regulators and the general public.”
LA Testing recently sponsored a video about VOCs and indoor air quality (IAQ) that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/DlbDI1ZfdTg.
