Title Will California Require Warning Labels on Beverages with a High Sugar Content?
Introduction LA Testing offers sugar profiles and complete nutritional analysis for a wide range of foods and beverages.

Garden Grove, CA, March 5th, 2014

Last month, California State Senator Bill Monning proposed legislation that would require a warning label on some beverages in the state of California. SB 1000 would require a label on the front of all beverage containers that have added sweeteners with 75 or more calories per 12 ounces. The label would read: STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay.

In a press release about the proposed bill, Senator Monning was quoted, “When the science is this conclusive, the State of California has a responsibility to take steps to protect consumers. As with tobacco and alcohol warnings, this legislation will give Californians essential information they need to make healthier beverage choices.” The document goes on to read, “Sugary drinks are the biggest contributor of added calories in the American diet, responsible for 43 percent of the added calories in the American diet over the last 30 years. Drinking just one soda a day increases an adult’s likelihood of being overweight by 27 percent and a child’s by 55 percent. Research shows that a soda or two a day increases the risk of diabetes by 26 percent.”

A California food testing laboratory that has extensive experience with helping to test foods and beverages for sugar profiles and other nutritional analysis is LA Testing. Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, says his company is ready to help if the bill becomes law. “Our food testing scientists already provide food testing services to allow companies to comply with labeling regulations such as food allergens and complete nutritional analysis for Nutrition Facts labels. We currently offer a sugar profile that includes fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose and sucrose. If the proposed bill becomes law, LA Testing will be ready to help companies comply with the beverage labeling testing requirements,” he reported.
