LA Testing Provides California Residents with Beryllium Information & Testing Services

Environmental testing services can help to identify beryllium hazards in the workplace and prevent exposure to this known carcinogen.

Garden Grove, CA, January 15th, 2014

Beryllium is an element with the symbol Be and atomic number 4.  It is extremely lightweight and hard, is a good conductor of electricity and heat, and is nonmagnetic. These properties make beryllium suitable for many industrial uses.  They include metalworking, ceramic manufacturing, electronic applications, atomic energy applications, laboratory work and extraction processes.  It can even be found in some dental alloys and sporting goods.

Beryllium and beryllium compounds were added to California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s (OEHHA) list of chemicals known to cause reproductive toxicity for purposes of Proposition 65 in 1987.

Exposure to this element can happen when a person breathes in beryllium mists, dusts or fumes, which can cause damage to the lungs.  Machinists, welders and equipment operators may be exposed through direct handling of beryllium and beryllium compounds.  Other workers may be exposed by performing laboratory analyses on beryllium compounds, coming into contact with contaminated equipment or by working near a beryllium operation.

People exposed to this element can develop beryllium disease, primarily by breathing contaminated air. Both acute and chronic health problems can occur.  The acute disease starts soon after exposure and resembles pneumonia or bronchitis. The chronic form of the condition, known as Chronic Beryllium Disease or CBD, may occur from several months to decades after exposure.

“Beryllium has also been identified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the National Toxicology Program as a human carcinogen,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.    “There are permissible exposure limits for workers who may be exposed to beryllium.  LA Testing offers analytical services to identify beryllium to protect workers and the general public from the risks associated with exposure to elevated levels of this element.”

LA Testing recently sponsored a video about beryllium and Chronic Beryllium Disease that can be seen at:
