Chico Firefighters Used to Battling Fires Now Fighting Mold
LA Testing offers mold and indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services to identify airborne contaminants and protect people.
Garden Grove, CA, January 13th, 2014
Last month, the Chico Enterprise-Record published a report about Chico Fire Department Station 5. According to the article, the fire station was undergoing several weeks’ worth of mold remediation activities. During the remediation, firefighters are temporarily being housed in a trailer located on the property. Mold was found earlier in the year and the Chico City Council has appropriated $25,000 to pay for the remediation project.
It does not take a lot of moisture for mold to grow, even a small leak or a minor flooding event can be enough. In Chico, mold was reportedly found by a leaking window, behind a dishwasher and in the area around the washer and dryer.
Under the right conditions, mold can begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours. Controlling moisture is the key step to preventing mold from growing in buildings and causing health concerns for building occupants. Once it is present, high levels of mold can cause allergies, trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals and even lead to infections in some people.
One of California’s leading mold and indoor air quality testing laboratories is LA Testing. The company has a network of laboratories in the state that offer supplies, test kits and expert analysis. “Whenever high levels of mold are found indoors, it is important to identify the root cause of the mold growth and have it properly fixed so that the problem does not return,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.
LA Testing offers analytical services to identify all types of indoor contaminants, from mold and bacteria to allergens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). LA Testing recently sponsored an online video about what mold needs to grow indoors. It can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr6_zVT-SP0
