Vapor Intrusion Issues Have Carson Residents Concerned
Garden Grove, CA, August 14th, 2013
Last month, an article on dailybreeze.com stated that the City of Carson was on the verge of declaring a local emergency to accelerate the cleanup of contaminated soil in a large neighborhood. Carson, located in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, is home to the Carousel housing tract with some 285 homes. The neighborhood began construction in 1966 and was built on land formally used to store crude oil.
According to the article, oil was first found in the soil in 2008 and has leaked down to approximately 50 feet below ground. Area residents have been frustrated by the slow progress in resolving the situation and many have signs in their front yards warning of the hazards.
Benzene and methane are two of the chemicals that concern people living in the area. Not only can these chemicals be a concern in the soil, but they can also potentially enter homes through a process known as vapor intrusion. Vapor intrusion occurs when there is a migration of volatile chemicals from contaminated groundwater or soil into an overlying building. Volatile chemicals can emit vapors that may migrate through subsurface soils and into indoor air spaces of overlying buildings in ways similar to that of radon gas.
One company that has been on the forefront of helping to test for contaminated soils, water and vapor intrusion issues in buildings across California is LA Testing. “People living above contaminated soil and water need to be aware of how they can be exposed to hazardous chemicals through vapor intrusion,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “LA Testing offers testing supplies and analysis to help determine if a wide range of chemicals are present in air, water and soil.”
LA Testing has sponsored an online educational video about the dangers associated with vapor intrusion. It can be seen at:
