Title Fresno Awarded $100K for Ongoing Lead Removal Projects
Introduction LA Testing provides lead testing services to help ensure homes and buildings are not a hazard to building occupants and young children.

Garden Grove, CA, July 11, 2013

Last month, it was announced that the City of Fresno was awarded a $100,000 grant to continue working to remove lead from homes that pose a health risk to families with young children. Fresno was selected for the grant as the 1st place winner in the 2013 Lead-Safe for Kids Sake competition.

Lead-based paint and lead contaminated dusts are the main sources of exposure for lead in children in the United States. Lead-based paints were banned for use in housing in 1978, but there are countless homes, buildings, schools and daycare centers that were built before the ban.

In California, lead is listed on the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, which is better known by its original name of Proposition 65. Lead was added to the Prop 65 list in 1987, shortly after the list was formed.

Lead is a highly toxic metal and is dangerous to all people, but especially to children. Babies and young children often put their hands and other objects that can have lead dust on them in their mouths. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Children's growing bodies absorb more lead than adult bodies do, and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead.”

One company that has been helping identify properties with dangerous levels of lead is LA Testing. LA Testing has a network of laboratories in California that provide testing services to the public, environmental consultants, industry and government regulators. “We applaud Fresno’s efforts to ensure young children live in homes that are free of dangerous levels of lead,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Simple testing procedures can quickly identify if the toxic metal is present in properties and LA Testing supplies everything from field test kits to laboratory analysis.”

LA Testing has sponsored an online video about lead hazards in the home that can be seen at:
