Garden Grove, CA, April 15th, 2013
The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board (ARB) has evaluated exposure to formaldehyde in California. ARB has found that one of the significant sources of inhalation exposure to formaldehyde comes from the chemical being emitted from composite wood products containing urea-formaldehyde resins.
Just last month, ARB posted a new online document about reducing formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products. It states, “Formaldehyde is a colorless gas and is released to the environment from a variety of sources including the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and propane, tobacco smoke, fireplaces, and wood burning stoves. It is also found at low levels in natural wood. It is commonly used to make a variety of products including resins that are used as adhesives in composite wood products. It is also found in many other products, including some furniture coatings, permanent press clothing and linens, wallpaper, carpet products, and personal care products such as nail hardeners. Health effects can include nose and throat irritation, a burning sensation of the eyes, wheezing, difficulty in breathing, and can trigger asthma symptoms in those with asthma. Sensitive individuals may experience fatigue, headache, and nausea. Formaldehyde is also a known human carcinogen.”
One company that has been helping manufacturers test their products for formaldehyde emissions and assisting people to test their indoor air quality is LA Testing. “In California, formaldehyde is an identified toxic air contaminant,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “LA Testing provides advanced analytical testing procedures for formaldehyde off gassing and for its presence in indoor environments,” he continued.
LA Testing has sponsored a video about the hazards associated with formaldehyde in indoor environments, it can be seen at: http://youtu.be/yD4pTC8GVpE.
