Garden Grove, CA, April 1, 2013
Over 38 million people live across California in close to 14 million housing units. It is the nation’s most populous state and home to a large population who are conscious of their health and concerns over contaminants in their homes.
A common contaminant found in people’s home is fungi, commonly referred to as mold. Mold can be found both indoors and outdoors. They are part of the natural environment and play an important role in the environment by breaking down and digesting organic material. Molds can multiply by producing microscopic spores, these spores are so small they easily float through the air and can be carried for great distances. When they come in contact with a wet or damp indoor environment they can easily begin to multiply. Mold growing in an indoor environment can quickly create problems.
“The potential human health effects of mold are a major concern,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, a leading mold and IAQ testing laboratory in the greater Los Angeles area. “Allergic reactions to mold are common and can be immediate or delayed. Exposure to mold can even cause asthma attacks in sensitive people. In addition, molds can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of individuals whether or not they are allergic to mold. Some types of mold are also known to cause infections in people with weakened immune systems. Mycotoxins are yet another health concern as some types of mold produce toxic byproducts which are known to cause a variety of health effects. The only way to know for sure if mold is a problem is to have the air tested and LA Testing is ready to help.”
