Title California Hospitals Battle with Infectious Diseases
Introduction LA Testing offers environmental testing services for a number of nosocomial and healthcare related infections.

Pasadena, CA, April 12th, 2011

In 2008, a Gavilan Hills resident helped to spearhead a landmark bill through the California Legislature.  The bill, Nile’s Law, is named for her son who was 15 when he died of a hospital acquired infection (HAI).  The law requires the state to collect and make public the number of HAIs acquired in California. In December, the first report from 383 general acute care facilities was released on the Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) website.

There are an estimated 200,000 HAIs in California each year resulting in 12,000 deaths annually.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) one out of every twenty hospital patients acquires an infection while being treated for another illness in the U.S.

A 2006 study sponsored by Resources for the Future and reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that hospital acquired infections added $8.1 billion in additional medical costs each year in the country.  Many of these pathogens are spread through poor indoor air quality (IAQ), from touching contaminated surfaces and due to improper hygiene procedures.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical, is one of the leading providers of indoor environmental analyses for healthcare facilities across California.  “Drug resistant microbes, such as MRSA, C. diff and now NDM-1, are being discovered in hospitals and other healthcare settings at an alarming rate,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical.    “Environmental testing services from LA Testing can help identify these dangerous pathogens through surface and air testing.  Identifying their presence is an important step in stopping the spread of these organisms that cause disease and death,” he continued.

LA Testing has multiple locations across California that provide this crucial environmental and indoor air quality (IAQ) testing solutions for the healthcare industry as well as residential and commercial properties.  To learn more please visit www.LATesting.com, email info@LATesting.com or call (800) 303-0047.
