Title Nonprofit Executives Plead Not Guilty to Allegations of Exposing Students to Asbestos
Introduction Asbestos testing services protect people, the environment and property from asbestos exposure.

Los Alamitos, CA, July 19th, 2010

In May three executives from the nonprofit organization, Firm Build, plead not guilty to charges of child endangerment and knowingly exposing someone to harmful materials.  The charges stem from an investigation that was launched in November of 2009 after the district attorney for Merced County in California received a witness tip.

Allegations against the trio include work that was performed at a training center in 2005 and 2006.  All three men were in positions of oversight for the nonprofit during the time that it is alleged that high school students were used to perform cleanup operations at the training center that exposed them to asbestos.  According to prosecutors there have been 5 former students who have come forward, but as many as 80 teenagers may have worked on the project.

Asbestos is commonly found in a wide range of building materials in older buildings.  These may include asbestos contaminated insulation, flooring, ceilings, roofing, siding, fire coating materials and a host of other products.  The removal and disposal of asbestos is highly regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution if asbestos regulations are not followed. During abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized and without the proper safety precautions asbestos can be inhaled increasing the chances of developing deadly lung cancer in the future.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of asbestos testing services, provides asbestos testing solutions to protect people and the environment from asbestos exposure. “The charges in California are serious and are a reminder to everyone to test materials to determine if asbestos is present before beginning any demolition or remodeling projects,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Not only are people subject to fines and jail sentences, but people’s health and well-being are at stake.”
