Title Food Recall Reminds Us All of the Dangers of Salmonella
Introduction California based LA Testing offers testing solutions for Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens to food producers and the general public.

Pasadena, CA, December 15th, 2009

Recently a California company issued a voluntary recall for cantaloupes that may have been contaminated by Salmonella.  The cantaloupes were shipped to ten states from California to New York.  This recall is just one of many that have occurred in 2009 from a wide variety of foods including peanuts, hot cocoa, pet foods and other food products.

Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium that is found worldwide in warm and cold-blooded animals, including humans.  Infections from the bacteria can be caused by eating contaminated foods and by transmission from animals to humans.

People exposed to Salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within 12 to 72 hours of exposure.  The infection, known as Salmonellosis, typically lasts from 4 to 7 days.  Some infected people require hospitalization and there is the possibility that the infection can spread from the intestines into the blood stream and beyond.  When this occurs the patient’s condition can deteriorate to the point of death if not properly treated.  People with weakened immune systems, the very young and the elderly are at greatest risk.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading food safety and consumer products testing laboratory, provides testing solutions to the general public, food processors and food safety agencies.  The company has also been on the forefront of providing information about food testing and food safety that can be found on several of their dedicated company websites including www.ConsumerProductsTesting.com and www.FoodTestingLab.com.

Salmonella causes a potentially deadly infection that can be prevented,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical.  “Proper testing procedures can catch it and other dangerous foodborne pathogens before they reach the American public’s tables and LA Testing is here to help.”
